| News & Features North Catholic crew team wins 2nd place The North Catholic High School crew team took the silver medal in the women’s lightweight 4+ event at the Scholastic Rowing Association National Championship regatta in Camden, N.J., last month.
They finished the second-ranked team in the country, behind only Shenendehowa High School of upstate New York, a school with an enrollment more than 10 times the size of North Catholic’s.
The school in Pittsburgh’s Troy Hill neighborhood finished the season with a record of 100 wins and two losses, both to Shenendehowa.
It was the third time in school history that the team placed in the top three nationally. In 1994, the women’s 4+ squad took home the gold medal.
Sophomore Stephanie Kuntz has accepted an offer to attend the U.S. National Team development camp in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., this summer, and fellow sophomore Mariah Kasun will attend an exclusive camp at the U.S. Naval Academy.
Several other team members are generating interest from Division 1 college programs.
The program has been under the direction of coach Frank Sands for 17 years. It recently celebrated its 50th scholarship athlete. The past three years alone have produced more than $100,000 in scholarship offers.
