Top teens receive St. Timothy Awards

Dedication to faith and service earns honors for 28

The Secretariat for Catholic Education honored 28 young people for their outstanding contributions to the church and community during the 17th annual St. Timothy Awards May 10 at Duquesne University.

The award recognizes four young people from each of the diocese’s four pastoral vicariate regions and a student from each of the 12 Catholic high schools.

“The church of the future will be in good hands with these young people,” said Joyce Gillooly, director of the Department for Youth and Young Adult Ministry.

“They are inspiring. Their dedication to faith and service really comes across with all of them.”

The young people recognized by vicariates and parishes were:

Vicariate 1 — Robert Burns, Resurrection, Pittsburgh’s Brookline neighborhood; Samantha Migliozzi, St. John Neumann, Franklin Park; April Warble, St. Basil, Pittsburgh’s Carrick neighborhood; and Trey Wertz, St. Sebastian, Ross Township.

Vicariate 2 — Caitlin Doyle, SS. Simon and Jude, Scott Township; Sarah Formica, St. Michael, Elizabeth; Robert Krebs, Holy Angels, Pittsburgh’s Hays neighborhood; and Kelly Weaver, St. Robert Bellarmine, East McKeesport.

Vicariate 3 — Morgan Anderer, St. Columbkille, Imperial; Dana Karlheim, St. Frances Cabrini, Center Township; Shannon Smith, St. Mary, Cecil; and Janelle Turcios, St. Malachy, Kennedy Township.

Vicariate 4 — Philip McGrath, St. Scholastica, Aspinwall; Maria Munsch, SS. John and Paul, Wexford; Maria Sciacca, St. Susanna, Penn Hills; and Robert Zanella, St. Mary of the Assumption, Herman.

Representing the high schools were: Our Lady of the Sacred Heart — Frank DeChellis, St. Malachy; Oakland Catholic — Aislin DeFilippo, St. Mary of the Mount, Pittsburgh’s Mount Washington neighborhood; Bishop Canevin — Kathryn Dlugos, Immaculate Conception, Washington; North Catholic — Jennifer Dulski, Most Holy Name of Jesus, Pittsburgh’s Troy Hill neighborhood; Aquinas Academy — Robert Fort, St. Richard, Richland Township; and Quigley Catholic — Valerie Fudurich, St. John the Baptist, Baden.

Also honored by high school were: Mount Alvernia — Brandy Geist, St. Cyril of Alexandria, Pittsburgh’s Brighton Heights neighborhood; Serra Catholic — Zachary Hudak, Our Lady of the Valley, Donora; Central Catholic — Stephen Joyce, Word of God, Swissvale; St. Joseph — Caitlin Schratz, Holy Sepulcher, Glade Mills; Seton-LaSalle — Katie Shanahan, St. Germaine, Bethel Park; and Vincentian Academy — Maria Verardi, St. Teresa of Avila, Perrysville.
