Friday, July 05, 2019 - Updated: 10:41 am

Junior Achievement of Western Pennsylvania awarded $161,000 in scholarships to 77 students from the Dioceses of Pittsburgh, Erie, Altoona-Johnstown and Greensburg and private schools across the region June 14 during the annual JA Scholarship Luncheon at the LeMont Restaurant in Pittsburgh’s Mount Washington neighborhood.

Students who are chosen for either the Opportunity or Inspire scholarships receive amounts ranging from $1,000 to $3,000. Both scholarships are funded through the support of organizations that contribute to JA scholarship programs through the PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit program and the PA Opportunity Scholarship Tax Credit program.

Since 2004, more than $1.7 million in scholarships have been provided to students in the Diocese of Pittsburgh through the program.

“We are very proud of our partnership with Catholic schools across western Pennsylvania,” said Dennis Gilfoyle, president and CEO of Junior Achievement of Western PA. “Serving all schoolchildren is at the very heart of Junior Achievement’s mission, and the spirit of cooperation and support we receive from our Catholic school partners is a tremendous gift back to the organization.”

For students to qualify for the scholarships, they must have received JA programming during the past school year as well as complete an application that includes a written essay about the impact of JA programming in their lives.

JA programs provide sequential business and economics education to students in kindergarten through high school throughout western Pennsylvania.
