College students interested in spending a week in Chimbote, Peru, to learn more about the Chimbote Foundation’s mission are eligible to apply for a $1,500 Mike Clark-WTAE TV Travel Award.
Through the generosity of mission supporters, as many as eight students will be awarded the scholarship. The award was announced during the 53rd Peru Mission Dinner in October. Clark is a longtime mission supporter and dinner emcee.
“The primary responsibility of our mission team members is to ‘Go, witness and to tell the story,’” said Dr. Patrick Joyce, director of the Office for Stewardship. “Isn’t that what (Clark) does so well? He’s a consummate professional communicator with a passion for our mission work in Chimbote.”
The selection committee for the process will be headed by Gary Slifkey, campus minister at Robert Morris University. Supported by the generosity of St. Margaret Mary Parish in Moon Township, several students from the university’s Colonial Catholic Campus Ministry have participated in mission trips to Chimbote.
“Without a doubt, each student participant has returned transformed and eager to share their powerful experience with others,” Slifkey said. “These unique mission experiences have been a blessing to our campus ministry program, so when I was asked to be chair of this project I accepted because I have seen firsthand the difference participating can make for everyone involved.”
Joyce noted that the Chimbote Foundation is excited to see who is selected and what stories the students will bring back to inspire others.
The application deadline is Jan. 7. Students who are selected will be notified by the end of January. They can choose between the following trip dates: June 14-24 and June 28-July 8.
More information and an application can be found at www.chimbotefoundation.org. Information can also be found by contacting Slifkey at email@example.com, or by calling 412-334-7804.
Two information nights for others interested in a mission trip to Chimbote are set for Jan. 15 or Jan. 30 from 7-8:30 in the Vanyo Room of St. Paul Seminary in Crafton. E-mail firstname.lastname@example.org or call 412-456-3065.
