The quiz bowl team at Central Catholic High School won the KDKA-TV “Hometown High-Q” championship July 7, defeating reigning champions Winchester Thurston.

The team, which is coordinated by science teacher Maddie Ranade, includes Xander Nese, Zeke Stuart and Simon Sweeney.

Central Catholic defeated the other finalists, Winchester Thurston and Yough School District, with a final score of 535 points. The team received a grand prize of $4,000 that will help fund student activities.

During the school year, students on the quiz bowl team meet weekly to watch past “Hometown High-Q” shows and compete with practice questions using a buzzer system. Scores are kept during each practice session, and each player’s progress is tracked throughout the year.
