After winning the state title, Quigley Catholic High School’s mock trial team is headed to the national championships May 12-14 in Boise, Idaho.
The school in Baden, Beaver County, successfully defended its Pennsylvania title April 1-2 at the state capitol in Harrisburg. The school has won three of the last four state championships.
The Spartans have won an unprecedented nine state titles in the 27 years Quigley has entered teams in the mock trial competition.
"Our team is extremely talented and flexible," coach Tim Waxenfelter said. "They respond quickly and intelligently to their opponents."
He is proud that his students were able to defeat some strong teams to win the state.
"These kids are the current link in a chain of incredible Quigley Catholic performers in the courtroom," Waxenfelter said.
Quigley Catholic finished second in the nation in 2002, and this year’s squad is focused on another strong performance at the nationals.
"Our team is very focused on achieving their ultimate goal," he said.
